Science Books & Films "Best Books for Children" Award
Creepy Crawlies and the Scientific Method, by Sally Stenhouse Kneidel, is more than a lab manual. In clear language, the book explains the scientific method and how it can be used by elementary school students. In addition, the activities are "hands-on" science, involving the students in preparing and designing the experiments, as well as performing the exercises. One of the strengths of the book is its emphasis on data collection and graphing. Generic graphs and tables are included, to be copied for student use. The author has prepared sample graphs and tables to guide students and teachers in applying the scientific method. Many good drawings and numerous photographs show children learning by doing and having fun. The author expresses concern for the experimental animals in her detailed descriptions of their proper care and handling. Even though the emphasis is on "field hunts" to collect the needed animals, an appendix is included listing commercial sources for acquiring them. Sally Kneidel, through her "map into a tiny wonderland," takes learners on many (114) exciting adventures.
